Description

Local food is at the core of many research and action programs both in philosophy and social science. A growing literature on the so-called locavorism suggests that local food can be the key for changing our food system in a more sustainable way, restoring community values, establishing a new and more conscious relationship to the environment.

The idea of locality, however, is often used to refer to a plurality of disparate entities and concepts, such as food miles, terroir, food identity, and place.

For this special issue we solicit papers that would put the notion of local food under a serious philosophical scrutiny and that would help to rethink conceptual and axiological questions pertaining to the relation between food, community, and place. Papers would be related, but not limited to, four main areas of research:

Ontology: what is local food? What relation links food and place? Can food identity change? What is a local community and how it relates to food?

Ethics: Is local food more sustainable than non-local ones? Is eating local a moral obligation? Does local food help in fostering social values, such as cohesion?

Politics: Should public health policy take into account local food? Should local food systems be politically privileged? How can overarching legislation on food safety and security coexist with very specific local identities, e.g. the regulation of fermentative processes?

Aesthetics: Does local food have a specific aesthetic value? How local food is related to pleasure? Do nostalgia and tradition play a role in the aesthetic appreciation of local food? What is an authentic food?
