Abstract

During the last few decades ever more works by Georg Simmel (1858–1918) have been translated into English. The last year was no exception; and it saw the publication of two especially important works: Sociology (1908) and The View of Life (1918). Most of Sociology already existed in piecemeal translations; but it is clearly important to have the full work available. The key essay in The View of Life—“Life as Transcendence” (Ch. 1)—has similarly been available for many years. But in this case, in contrast, we lacked the main body of the work.
