Abstract

In this essay, I wish to reflect on the nature of time and its relation to consciousness as they described both within and outside contemporary phenomenology. I shall first consider certain views of time which interpret it as unreal and/or "subjective", and then I shall take up the opposite sort of theories in which time is real and "objective". I hope to show that neither view by itself is adequate, and I shall try to work out a synthesis of the two, largely in the context of the later writings by Martin Heidegger.
