Abstract

A recurring theme in the preceding chapters is that learning to practise as professionals not only includes knowledge and skills, but also entails the development of professional ways of being in interplay with prevailing traditions of practice. This part of the book, consisting of three chapters, focuses on professional ways of being that are under formation, especially in their early phases. This chapter and the next explore the interplay between emerging professional ways of being and the social, cultural, historical, material world in which they are embedded. The context in which these professional ways of being are formed consists of various interdependent spheres that include: the educational programme that is to prepare aspiring professionals for skilful practice; traditions of practice for the profession
