The foothold gained by semiotics in Finland during recent years justifies an examination of the special conditions and nature of this movement in the scholarly atmosphere of Finland. Semiotics, as is well known, has come to adapt to various local traditions, which has led to the emergence of clearly national schools of semiotics. However, it is hardly possible to speak yet of a Finnish school of semiotics, although conditions for the development of such a movement already exist.
