Abstract

Recently Sherman et al. [5] proposed more accurate studies of phantom pain - a syndrome still without definite pathogenesis. Furthermore, personal and social factors should be considered in these studies. Incidences of 0.4%–50% in amputees and a file of 68 recommended therapeutic measures (most of which are not superior to the effects of placebos) reveal the low level of our knowledge. The aim of our study was the determination of the phenomenology of the late amputation syndrome and of somatic and psychosocial aspects which may be statistically and causally correlated to the degree of pain.
