Abstract
Kautsky's final, and indeed most radical statement of "orthodox" Marxism is to be found in his The Road to Power (1909). It arose out of a polemic between Kautsky and the revisionist Max Maurenbrecher, who argued that for the present the reformist road of parliamentary work was the only one the party could follow to arrive at political power.1Kautsky's critique was so radical that the SPD executive forced him to make several changes in the second edition, and to accept personal responsibility for the content of the book.2
