Abstract

The Provo action group originated in Amsterdam in the spring of 1965; it existed for two years, until May 1967. The movement acquired worldwide fame following its involvement in events surrounding a controversial royal wedding and the June 1966 riots in Amsterdam. The term "Provo" was borrowed from Dutch criminologist Wouter Buikhuisen, who used it as an alternative to nozem, a sort of Dutch beatnik.
