The term "phenomenology" is frequently mentioned in present day medicine and psychiatry. As this term is used by different authors to denote various topics, its meaning may sometimes be obscure. Hence, it is the aim of this article, to clarify the diverse facets of the term, and then, to focus upon the ways in which phenomenology has been used by investigators in psychiatric studies and monographs.
