This paper attempts to present an overview of the current evolution of theoretical psychology as this has been reflected in the 1985 and the current 1987 conferences as well as in other events which have served to make this emerging discipline visible to the field as a whole. It outlines a brief overview of the concrete events such as these conferences, related publications, and the formal establishment of the International Society for Theoretical Psychology (ISTP) as well as the intellectual trends reflected in these events. The most general conclusion to be drawn from all of this is that we are seeking not so much to eliminate the many differences in perspectives that we bring to these events, as that we are attempting to develop a clear and common language in terms of which we can explore and understand these differences.
