For years I have been teaching the Bible, principally the Old Testament, and in recent times my interest has been getting ever keener in the development of biblical thought and in the probability of the existence of a certain biblical metaphysic or ontology; that is, a certain understanding of reality underlying biblical teaching. These are points that need to be worked out in greater detail and not in isolation but in dialogue with students of the development of human thought. The present essay may serve as the first one for me in this direction.
