Abstract

In a recent paper,¹ Paul Smolensky replies to an article that Jerry Fodor and I published in 1990.² I shall use this opportunity to make a partial reply; partial, because I lack the space here to address all of the issues Smolensky raises in his paper—a paper that spans sixty-seven pages of print. I shall confine myself to making one key observation and to attempting to clarify a few issues, leaving a fuller discussion for another occasion.³
