In the development of Peruvian semiotics, two stages are clearly differentiated: the first from 1970 to 1975, which could be called the period of pedagogic dissemination of the semiotic discipline, and the second from 1975 to 1980, the period of consolidation and growth of the investigative process. According to the program envisaged for the near future, a third stage is forthcoming—one which will bring together academic and university activities, and which will work toward the development of the investigative process by aiming to formulate a theory and practice of semiotics more closely adapted to the comprehension of the different objects of semiotic knowledge which are produced by the multilingual, multicultural society of Peru.
