William Glasser, a California-based psychologist, developed reality counselling in the 1950s and 1960s. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and in 1953 received an MD from Western Reserve. He received his psychiatric training at Brentwood Hospital, and also studied at the University of California at Los Angeles. He became head psychiatrist for the California Youth Authority at the Ventura School for Girls. In 1968 he opened the Institute for Reality Therapy in Brentwood, Los Angeles.
