Arnold Lazarus was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1932, the youngest of four children. When he started university he intended to become a writer and journalist, but then he found out he could become a psychotherapist without formal medical studies and pursued his interest in psychology and psychotherapy. In 1956 he was awarded a BA in psychology and sociology, in 1957 a BA honours in psychology and an MA in experimental psychology and in 1960 a PhD in clinical psychology — all from Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg. He became a part-time psychologist with the Mental Health Society in Johannesburg in 1958–59.
