Abstract

A survey of the psychological literature, though not exhaustive, reveals substantial consensus amongst theoretical psychologists concerning (i) the features common to logical positivism and logical empiricism, and (ii) the differences between positivist philosophy of science and social constructionist metatheory.Among the few dissenters, Tolman and Greenwood, and possibly Terwee, are, however, quite correct in their linking of social constructionism with these earlier intellectual traditions. Those connections can be elaborated, and this is my aim in the remainder of the book.
