Formalisms

The beginning of the 20th Century saw the eclosion in Russia, Germany or Austria of a number of traditions in aesthetics, literary theory and art history which are generally refered to through the epithet of "formalism". The Russian Formalists (Viktor Šklovskij, Jurij Tynjanov, Boris Eichenbaum, etc.), Eduard Hanslick, Oskar Walzel, Heinrich Wöllflin, Wilhelm Worringer are among the best known representatives of these traditions. These various "formalisms", of course, powered the rise of radical new methods that have defined our approach of literature, painting or music to this day. The present collection aims to provide a space devoted to the renewed study both of their contemporary legacy and historical interactions.
