I have often been asked to contribute to a volume of essays presented to some more or less distinguished contemporary thinker. I have performed this task on a number of occasions, usually with a certain amount of grumbling. On this occasion, however, my feeling is entirely different. I would be denying something essential in myself if I ignored Mr. Leroy S. Rouner's request, for I dare say that W. E. Hocking and I share an intellectual and spiritual companionship which has been unique in my experience.
