Abstract

A clarification of the concept of development, and of its relation to technology, is of more than purely academic interest. Technology is conceived as the necessary step from underdevelopment to development,¹ as the indicator of the general situation of a country, or as the necessary condition for human life as such. According to Robert Solow, in a 1956 paper for which he was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize in Economics, the rate of technological progress determines the growth of an industrialized country.²
