Abstract

A third generation philosopher in the interpretative line founded by Confucius, Mencius' thoughts on the subject of ethics extended further into political domains than did the Master's. This is seen, for example, in the emphasis that he gave to the significance of a government structure based on an ethic of "humaneness' 仁 (ren), which signifies the central Confucian concept of moral conduct in its original and primary sense.
