Abstract

Through the centuries, more and more of the properties of matter have been explained by physics and chemistry. Subtle new concepts like mass, the electromagnetic field, and the electron have first been postulated as theoretical entities, and then have become accepted as part of physical reality as they become integral parts of scientific theories which are intellectually compelling and which meet the pragmatic criterion of successful prediction and control.
