This is a translation of an essay that Martin Heidegger composed in June 1945 under the title "Die Armut." In this essay, Heidegger addresses the unfolding crisis of philosophy and the need for it to return to its simplest origins. An opening quote from the poet, Friedrich Hölderlin, provides the leading motif for the essay: "For us, everything is concentrated on the spiritual. We became poor, in order to become rich."
